1. Where will he go?
It’s borderline muggy inside the Niceville football weight room, and Jay-Z and Linkin Park’s 2004 anthem Numb/Encoreblasts over the rumble of the room’s air conditioning system.
A slight breeze comes off the horseshoe of Eagle Stadium through a set of double doors. It’s shortly after 10 a.m. on this June 16 morning, and small group of teenagers gathers around Eagles’ defensive backs coach Sean Moorer to listen to a story.
“The 49ers had just beaten the Chargers in the Super Bowl,” he begins. “And by that point Jerry Rice was in his 11th year and getting up there in age. So the day after the game the team was back in San Francisco and (49ers quarterback) Steve Young goes to the facility early in the morning…
“He looks out and sees Rice running routes, simulating catching balls in the Super Bowl.”
Niceville senior Juanyeh Thomas grins. He looks around at a mostly empty weight room.
Sounds like me.
2. Niceville’s Juanyeh Thomas picks Ga. Tech over UF, Auburn
For Juanyeh Thomas, it was a liberating call. A “stress relief” following the chaos of a junior campaign full of Power Five conference offers.
On Saturday, after visiting Georgia Tech once last season for a game-day visit and then again this summer in late July, the Niceville senior cornerback dialed up head coach Paul Johnson and verbally committed to the Yellow Jackets.
“He was so happy because all the coaches were in the room and he put me on speaker phone,” said the 6-foot-2, 208-pound 17-year-old. “I told them I was coming there and everybody was happy. All the coaches were texting me.”
Auburn and Florida, the other two finalists courting Thomas, were hoping to get that call. But in Georgia Tech Thomas saw a future.
3. FWB native rises with American Ballet Theatre
Enchanted seems like the best word to describe Courtney Shealy.
At 19, she has explored underwater caves in Oman, risen through ranks at the United States’ most prestigious ballet company and danced in front of thousands at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. Her life plays before her in movielike experiences, nothing short of a dream she worked tirelessly to make come true.
One audition took Courtney from Fort Walton Beach to her fast-paced life in the Big Apple.
4. Airman spells out proposal with fellow airmen
Lots of people find creative ways to propose to their loved ones.
Some have “Will you marry me?” posted on a stadium’s JumboTron. Others pop the question while floating above the earth in a hot air balloon.
Staff Sgt. Shane Schubot did them all one better.
5. Woman shares revenge porn ordeal
Jane was at the airport on her way to visit family in late June when she got a text from a friend.
The friend asked, “Can we talk about something without it getting weird?”
This friend had discovered online photos of Jane that were private and explicit.
The photos were more than “weird.” They were an invasion of privacy.
