DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — DeFuniak Springs scouts were invited to hold the American Flag at the opening of the Geico 500 on Sunday.

Cub Scout Pack 25, Boy Scout Troop 525 and Girl Scout Troop 759 camped out in tents with their families last weekend near the Talladega Super Speedway just outside Birmingham, Alabama.

During their stay, the scouts visited the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, had a meet-and-greet with NASCAR driver Ryan Newman and saw the Sparks Energy 300 race and a Charlie Daniels concert.

On Sunday the scouts watched the race from the infield of Talladega’s racing oval — which, at 2.66 miles, is NASCAR’s largest. Before the race, officials invited the local scouts to hold the flag during the national anthem.

The scouts were escorted by the Alabama National Guard during the anthem while skydivers landed within feet of them.

Scouts holding the flag included Antonio DeRycke, Dakota Hardesty, Hunter Holmes, Stephen Holmes, Jackson Howell, Amanda Lane, Elizabeth Lane, Sara Lane, Ethan Ludlow, Noah Ludlow, Christiansen Mosely, Marianda Mosely, Charlie Nick, Logan Odom, Shane Odom, Aaron Wilmoth and Josh Wilmoth.
