FORT WALTON BEACH — American Legion Post 235 hosted a flag retirement ceremony Wednesday evening at the post on Hollywood Boulevard.

The post receives a large number of flags each year in a drop box for worn flags and holds a representative retirement ceremony on Flag Day. Honor guards from Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field participated in the traditional burning, which dates back to 1937.

Flags that are retired are generally considered to “be worn to a condition in which it should no longer be used to represent the nation.”
