Coast Guard medevacs diver suffering from bends

Also called decompression sickness, the bends results when bubbles from dissolved gases form in the blood or in tissues because of rapidly decreasing pressure.

Staff Report

The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a charter vessel near Pensacola, on Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at approximately 2 p.m. of a 66-year-old male, aboard the charter vessel Wet Dream, who was reported to be suffering from the bends after a dive.

The Wet Dream is a dive charter operated out of Pensacola by the Scuba Shack.

Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Station Pensacola Response Boat-Medium crew with two emergency medical services personnel also aboard.

The boat crew arrived on scene at 3:14 p.m., took the patient aboard, and transferred him to Station Pensacola where local emergency medical services were waiting.

The patient is reported to be in stable condition, and will be transferred to another hospital for any necessary decompression.
