SEAGROVE BEACH — Agencies including the South Walton Fire District and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire overnight Thursday.
According to Corey Dobridnia, spokeswoman for the WCSO, the call came in at 12:15 a.m. about the fire at 26 Beachside Drive. SWFD crews responded and had extinguished the fire by 12:59 a.m. All occupants made it out of the home safely and neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.
SWFD spokesman Sammy Sanchez said the fire originated on the second floor balcony ceiling area and was contained to the second floor. After an investigation by the SWFD and Florida State Fire Marshall’s office, the fire was ruled accidental/electrical in nature and the home was turned back over to the property owners. No damage estimate was available as of Friday afternoon.
Sanchez said the family in the home was sleeping when the fire began, and the mother woke up when she heard the smoke alarm.
“Smoke alarms do work,” Sanchez said. “The mother heard the smoke alarm, and then when she heard it everybody got up and when they started investigating and realized the balcony was on fire.”
Sanchez encouraged all homeowners to make sure their smoke detectors are working properly.
