CRESTVIEW — One little boy’s first Halloween costume has a lot of meaning behind it.

After escaping a house fire early Oct. 2, Stacey McDonald said she’s a lot more thankful for life. And to show her appreciation she dressed her 5-month-old son, Dominic, as a firefighter for Halloween.

“He was originally going to be Winnie The Pooh,” Stacey said.

Stacey said she remembers waking up at 1:41 a.m. feeling hot. When she noticed the fire she quickly woke up her husband and grabbed her son and ran out of the door.

“We sat and watched our home burn down,” Stacey said.

From the 911 operators to the American Red Cross volunteers and the firefighters, Stacey said she has nothing but praise for the people who tried to help.

“They are the best people,” she said.

Despite the horrific circumstances, Stacey said the experience has taught her important life lessons.

“I do not regret this,” she said. “I would not have known how strong I am as a mother.”

On Halloween Stacey was stuck at work, but her son got to go trick-or-treating with his grandmother in his costume complete with a red firefighter’s hat. Stacey dressed him up one more time Tuesday morning so she could get a photo.

“He just lit up,” she said. “I thank God every day. He is my whole world.”
