Staff report

NICEVILLE — First-grade students at Plew Elementary School found a loaded gun on school grounds Friday, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies believe the gun is connected to an incident Thursday night when two suspects jumped a school fence as they fled from Niceville police.

A Plew Elementary teacher was walking her students back to class around 11:30 a.m. when she noticed students looking at an object in the leaves between the library and a classroom building, according to the Sheriff’s Office. It turned out to be a .40-caliber handgun.

No one was hurt.

The school resource officer retrieved the gun and turned it over to the Niceville Police Department. As a precaution, a sheriff’s K-9 unit was called in to search the campus.

The Sheriff’s Office could file charges if the person who left the gun on school grounds can be identified.
