A Destin staple is getting a facelift.

Since 2001, Shakes has been a popular spot for frozen, sugary treats. Owner Wayne Chernicky proudly says he believes it’s the oldest ice cream stand in Destin.

“We hear quite often from visitors that we’re the first stop they make on vacation and the last place they go before they leave,” he said. “We’re a family tradition.”

Now Wayne and his wife, Dee, will be ready for another 17 years after the current renovation of the business is completed in early February.

“We’re not closing, we’re just updating,” he said.

Wayne and Dee moved to Destin from Tulsa, Missouri. Like many Destin transplants, they had visited often but wanted to make the trip permanent. Wayne retired in 1999, he and Dee married in 2000 and they made the move to Destin in 2001 and set up shop. And they’ve never looked back.

Shakes Frozen Custard was originally founded in 1991 in Joplin, Missouri. However, the Destin franchise is No. 1 in the company, said Dee.

“We have good managers, some who have been with us almost since we first started,” said Dee. “I worked there for two years before I started my women’s ministry.”

Over the years, Shakes’s has become a big part of the community, participating in local events and parades as well as giving back to those less fortunate.

As for the updates, the outside of Shakes will be renewed by Adventure Development, the same contractor company that built the original building. Some of the renovations include stone around the outside of the building and a 6-foot ice cream cone sign.

“Destin is a very upscale area and we want to keep up with the growth and appearance,” she said. “It was due for a facelift.”

While the outside may look different, Dee and Wayne promise not much else will change beyond the new look. It will be the same menu and same service.

“We’re going to continue to serve a quality product to our locals and visitors,” said Dee. “We want to reflect the excellence of Destin and the beauty of Destin.”
