Future politicians can get a taste on what it takes to run and improve the city.

The city of Destin is now accepting applications for the Destin Youth Council. The youth council is a composed of high school aged students from Destin who will have an opportunity to participate in the city’s decision-making and planning process. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply throughout the month of June.

“It’s geared toward the youth in our community and their goal is to find issues that impact the youth,” said Doug Rainer, the city’s spokesman.

Youth council members will represent Destin youth on issues important to them, identify ways to improve the city, seek out appropriate funds for activities and act as an advisory board to Destin City Council.

Applicants must live within the city limited and be in grades 9 through 12 with at least a 2.25 grade point average. Members will serve a one year tern starting in July and ending in June 2018.

“We (council city members) come together and approve members as a whole,” said Councilwoman Prebble Ramswell.

Up to 14 youth council members will get elected. Members will then elect a chairperson, vice-chairperson and secretary. They will meet once a month on the fourth Thursday of the month and discuss city improvements, especially when it comes to the youth.

“They will take on a project, like fixing up a park, and report back to the city council.” Rainer said. “They have the freedom to choose how they want to give back to the community.”

Members will also promote existing positive programs and develop programs, projects and activities for young people.

“It’s a great way to introduce them into the political process and how the city makes decisions,” said Ramswell.

Ramswell said the youth council members consistently attend city council meetings and observe how a meeting should be conducted.

“This is an exciting opportunity to see how things work in our own city and learn how to become effective leaders in the community,” she said.
